Keiji Inafune still wants to make Mega Man Legends 3

“If somebody asked, even right now, what’s the game you want to create most? It’s still Legends 3,” Inafune said to the site. “I put so much effort into that game, so much passion into that game, but it didn’t happen. It’s always a regret in my mind. Even now…”

Any thoughts? It would be great if Capcom decided to just do it and have him return to work on it. It would strengthen their bonds and allow for the possibility of him working on future Mega Man games as a contractor. I would love to see COMCEPT USA (his current company) contracted by Capcom to continue working on Mega Man.

It's nice to hear, but it means pretty much the same as it did the last time he said it. Nothing. There's no way Capcom would work with him now, for this project or any other. The closest we'll ever get to this is if Inafune decides to make a spiritual successor to the Legends series, like he is with Classic with Mighty Number 9, and sort of how he is with Gunvolt to the Zero and ZX series.

It would be nice though...

Side note, Inafune mentioning the Dragon Balls made me smile. I never knew he was a Dragonball Fan.

Cause I'm still not clear, what did happen between him & Capcom in the first place?

It's been awhile, but I remember he said something about not having anywhere else to go in the company anymore. He almost made it seem like he was just bored, and felt like he had done all he could at Capcom, and decided to just do something else.

I'm sure there's more to it than that, of course. Maybe there was just a lot of bad blood going on at Capcom between him and other people. I do remember Inafune complaining a lot about the state of Japanese Game Development. He might have ruffled some feathers. The fact that basically everything Mega Man related came to a dead halt almost immediately after he left the company sure makes it seem like someone was out to get him.

If memory serves, part of it was trying to ensure change for the long-term survival of the company, and the company being resistant to that sort of thing.

Here is a little bit on that, and I'm sure we've got other Inafune articles there which detail things further.

I hope they can make it. I want to make sure Volnutt's status is different.

His status is currently "mooned."

If he REALLY wanted to make Mega Man Legends 3, he shouldn't have left capcom in the middle of development.

Maybe if Mighty No.9 & Azure Striker Gunvolt sells well, maybe he can buy the rights of Mega Man from them & make it.

Maybe someday. I don't see it happening now, though.

Maybe, though I'm not sure we have the whole story from even his perspective.

Possibly. Even that would be no guarantee, though it would have improved its chances significantly.

Still, Inafune didn't think that with the public face the game had that they would do something resulting in such monumental backlash... and he was wrong.

Doesn't that strike you as fairly manipulative? I mean, by putting it out in the open and leaving, Capcom gets all the backlash and he comes off as a martyr.

What happens to games like this is something that happens to lots of games. They get a bit done and for whatever reason, it gets canned. The only difference is that the process was visible.

What happened to ML 3 was unfortunate, but it's also a fact of the industry.

Perhaps, but also true. Of course, either way, it doesn't help that Capcom was unwilling to deliver on any of the promised transparency, either.

True only to a degree, because, again, this was basically unprecedented for something that wasn't a crowdfunded game.
