We've had new consoles come out since the last emulated versions though. If Nintendo doesn't have any issue rereleasing their emulated virtual console games when the exact same thing is already playable in Wii mode, then why are full remakes with new features added to them being held back because of it. The mobile versions of Sonic 1 and 2 were even made to replace the emulated versions. (People who had bought the previous versions could download the new ones for free.)

And if that is the reason, then how is Sonic 2 3D getting a pass?

Alternatively: We have the Super Mario Advance versions of Mario titles as well as the originals on Wii U VC.

There is no other Sonic 2 for the Nintendo 3DS, maybe?

Just like how there's no Sonic 2 on Wii U, Xbox One, or Playstation 4?

We already had this.

That's a Nintendo DS game, so it doesn't count. ;)

Nor is it available in the eShop.

As for the other systems, my hope is that when/if they do release Sonic 1 and 2 for them that they use the Taxman version.

Incidentally, weren't the Taxman ports a Western project originally designed for mobile while the M2 3D Classics thing is a separate project from Japan?

Were the Taxman ports even released in Japan?

Well, it's a bit more complicated than the above.

Sonic 1 and 2 were on mobile before the Taxman ports, and what happened there? They got updated as a free patch to the Taxman version if people had already bought Sonic 1 and 2, simple as that.

Not so simple with consoles. They have to get approval for the updates from the respective console owners, and they have to pay to apply the updates, so doing a free patch would see much less value come out of it. Microsoft are notorious for being petty about these things in particular.

Could future ports on future consoles be the taxman version? Potentially, although there may be some compatibility issues with previous gen consoles with that.

I'm not sure they could do that with the Wii U, since the Taxman ports are straight-up remakes, while the Virtual Console is the original code, if I'm not mistaken.

I think the Taxman stuff would have to be sold as regular eShop instead of Virtual Console as a result.

Another day, another Sonic 3 update, but this one may be more final.

is the main issue Sega's lack of interest or the legality of the music? if it's the latter, wasnt there a PC port that replaced the Jackson tracks with something else? do they somehow have no access to that? I mean it's not as memorable but if it could help with the project getting greenlit...

They could use the PC versions music, but then most people would just complain about that instead of being grateful that the game got released at all.

It could also just be Sega wanting to focus more on their free to play games than on this.
