It's mainly called the Dreamcast era for simplicity's sake. So long as everyone comprehends what you're saying, the name doesn't really matter. Here's how I see it.
1) Sonic 1 - S&K: Classic Era
2) Sa1 - Shth (or heroes for most): Dreamcast/Adventure Era
3) Shth (06 for some) - Secret Rings (+Rise of Lyric): Dark Ages
4) Unleashed - Generations: Modern/Boost Era (though 07 isn't really modern any more, so I usually say boost)
5) Lost World - ?????: Modern Era

Also, Heroes differs from Adventure mainly in terms of control. Level design and music feel pretty similar. Adventure controls are tight and smooth. Heroes are slippery and all over the place.

So Knuckles' and Rouge's inability to glide or climb, a lack of a spin dash charge,a very slow and limited range of flight count as subtle, and the huge difference in mobility and physics are subtle. The only thing the two have in common are the A button functions and even those aren't exactly the same.

If they hadn't changed, then the team dynamic wouldn't have worked.

So the implementation was poor.

Basically, you're confusing the specifics of implementation with the general style.

Which is a gigantic difference in gameplay nonetheless, and not subtle in the slightes.

So the implementation was poor.

It's not that the implemation was poor. It's just entirely different, which is the exact point I was making. ShTH plays more like Sonic Adventure than Heroes.

I'mma sucker for spoiling things. Here's the next game as presented by Sega themselves:
Spoiler: show
It's Sonic Generations 2 with BOOM! Sonic. How is this legit? This is the biggest rumor to hit this side of the Sonic fandom? I'll just say this... Look beyond what you see... (that and it's in the pumpkin from October.) How is this actually from Sega themselves? It's official CG art with an official announcement that there was stuff in it. I just happen to find it in the right eye very zoomed in and the entire photo turned to negative. So how is there BOOM! Sonic in it? The first piece was that there was a 3 in that eye. The Gen 2 title is purely my own speculation. There you go. From Sega to me to you.

and Big doesn't fish, and Amy became as fast as Sonic despite not really showing any previous indication of that

Ignoring, um, whatever that was about, Sega's released a new piece of artwork recently:

I really doubt that Boom will be brought into it. The only place Boom has been a success if the TV show, which even then is a heavy YMMV because it has nothing to offer beyond its own brand of humour, and humour is heavily subjective. And the TV show does not translate well to a video game.

Boom Sonic's probably there because they're representing the whole franchise, or because of Fire and Ice. At this point it's either:

Game with Classic, game with Modern, Fire and Ice

OR

Generations 2: Generations' Sloppy Seconds, Fire and Ice.

Also, pretty sure that's not new artwork of Classic Sonic.

I wonder why Classic Sonic looks light blue.

According to one of the comments, the numbers on the left say "Hidden meaning" in binary. Good thing someone had a Miles Electric on them.
